When Your Kitchen Does It All

Living in a cozy apartment often means making spatial sacrifices. One of the most common areas to shrink? The kitchen. While a tiny kitchen can be charming, it also comes with a unique set of challenges.

If you find yourself constantly bumping elbows with housemates while making breakfast, or cramming your dinner table into the corner every night, this post is for you. Well, and me🙃

Here are 20 drawbacks of having a tiny kitchen that every small-space dweller can understand:

1.The Appliance Abyss:

Where do the toaster, blender, and stand mixer go? Tiny kitchens often lack sufficient cabinet space for all your culinary gadgets.

2. The Pot and Pan Pile-Up:

Stacking towering piles of cookware is a recipe for disaster (literally, it could topple over!). It doesn’t in my case because I tried my best to minimize buying pots and pans due to lack of sufficient storage.

3. Canister Chaos:

Forget having a dedicated pantry. Storing dry goods can be a Tetris match in a small kitchen. I have a tiny spice rack which I double as storage for my tea and coffee canisters. I found this rack at PEP Stores

4. Chopping Board Conundrum:

Forget elaborate meal prep – a single chopping board might occupy most of your workspace.

5. The Appliance Shuffle:

Need the mixer? Better clear the counter of everything else first! Whether it to find what you are looking to use next or to get space for one more appliance… Maaaaan, I hate this!

6. The Dirty Dish Dilemma:

Handwashing dishes becomes a game of musical chairs, as you juggle clean and dirty dishes in the limited sink space. Yes, you might have to land some space from one or two of your dining chairs for your dishwashing.

7. The Four-Burner Fantasy:

Downsize your culinary dreams – a two-burner stovetop is likely your reality. I currently have a two-cooker hotplate. Since this is not enough though, I had to buy me a pressure cooker to give me hand and speed up my cooking.

8. The Roasting Restriction:

Forget about hosting Thanksgiving dinner. A small oven limits what you can cook. Like literally! My oven won’t even fit a small turkey 🙄

9. The Herb Garden Myth:

Fresh herbs on the windowsill? Adorable, but they might take up precious counter space.

10. The Dining Table Tetris:

Folding tables become your best friend, as you constantly rearrange furniture for meals. As real as this may be, I still prefer a solid table because the thought of having to remove my furniture daily for whatever reason is just not practical enough for me. I’ll find my way around things 😅

11. The Living Room Limbo:

Where does the couch go? Living room furniture placement can feel restricted by kitchen necessities.

12. The Movie Night Mishap:

Forget about sprawling out on the couch with popcorn – movie nights might involve some awkward furniture rearranging. I am not even joking!

13. The Intimate Dinner Party:

Forget inviting a crowd. Tiny kitchens limit the number of guests you can comfortably entertain. I keep postponing them. Perhaps I should just organize a dinner party at a lovely restaurant 🤫

14. The Kitchen Dance:

Cooking with a partner requires a well-coordinated dance to avoid bumping into each other.

15. The Post-Dinner Debacle:

Nowhere to linger after a meal? Guests might feel pressure to leave due to limited space. I am not there yet though.

16. The Clutter Catastrophe:

Keeping a tiny kitchen organized is a constant battle. Again, I am not joking!

17. The Dark and Dingy Dilemma:

Small kitchens can feel cramped and lack proper ventilation. This is why herbs on my window seal are a solid NO! In my defence, they’ll block light 🙁

18. The Design Dreams Deferred:

Grand design ideas might have to be scaled back to fit the limited space.

19. The Grease Gauntlet:

Cooking splatters travel far and wide in a tiny kitchen, making cleaning a constant chore.

20. The Delivery Dilemma:

Forget about elaborate takeout meals. Where will all those containers go?

Living in a small kitchen can be frustrating, but it can also be an exercise in creativity and resourcefulness.

With smart storage solutions, clever space-saving appliances, and a little bit of planning, you can make your tiny kitchen a functional and charming space.
