How to Style a Small Space in Namibia

Living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to settle for small style. Whether you’re in a studio flat, a backyard room, or a tiny apartment in Windhoek, you can create a space that feels open, organized, and undeniably you.
My previous post was packed with tips on budget friendly décor for Namibian homes. To I am giving more tips on how to style a small space in Namibia. Let’s talk everything vision, function, and beauty on a budget.
Why Small Spaces Deserve Big Ideas
We often treat small homes like they’re temporary. “I’ll decorate properly when I move to a bigger place.” Sound familiar? But here’s the truth: Every corner deserves intention no matter how tight the space or tight the budget.
When I started styling professionally, some of my first client spaces were rooms smaller than 3 x 3 meters. But with just a few thoughtful changes, they felt like home fresh, functional, and full of life.
Step 1: Start with One Vision Word
Before you move anything, ask yourself: How do I want to feel in this space?
- Calm
- Energized
- Romantic
- Modern
- Soft
- Natural
- Creative
- Grounded
Action step: Choose ONE word and let it guide all your styling choices.
Step 2: Zone Like a Pro
Small spaces thrive when you define “zones.” Even one room can feel spacious if each area has a clear purpose.
Ideas:
- A corner with a floor cushion = reading nook
- A tray + mug shelf = coffee station
- A stool + mirror = beauty corner
- Your bed = styled sanctuary, not just a mattress
Use rugs, baskets, crates, or even fabric panels to separate zones visually without walls.
Tip: Push furniture against walls strategically to open up floor space, but don’t clutter every corner.
Step 3: Light and Color Make the Room
Color changes everything especially in small spaces. Here are three things you could do and three things you should avoid when dealing with color.
What to do:
- Use light or neutral tones as your base
- Add one or two bold color accents (burnt orange, sage green, blush pink)
- Use mirrors to reflect light and give the illusion of more space
What to avoid:
- Dark heavy curtains
- Overcrowded gallery walls
- Too many contrasting patterns
Action step: Pick 2 main colors + 1 accent. Style with cushion covers, throws, or a painted crate for shelving.
Step 4: Style with Function in Mind
In a small space, everything must serve a purpose. For example:
- Crates could be transformed into cute bedside tables or shelving
- Ottomans for hidden storage
- Hooks or pegboards for wall styling and hanging bags or baskets
- Foldable items that can be put away when not in use
It is important to make your styling beautiful but also practical. That’s the art of purposeful design.
Step 5: Declutter With Kindness
Small spaces need clarity, having them cluttered will just shrink them even more. Decluttering doesn’t mean you have to throw everything out.It means:
- Choose what matters
- Style what brings joy
- Tuck away what overwhelms
- Finding purpose for everything else.
Use baskets, bags, and shelves. Your space will breathe again.
Step 6: Add One Signature Style Element
Even in a small room, you can introduce one bold moment. Let’s look at a few examples you could try out.
- A gallery of printed quotes
- A DIY lamp made from a jar
- A plant corner with a stool
- A styled tray with a candle + book
- Even coffee station or bar themed in your favorite colors.
Whatever you do, let this signature touch reflect you.
Real Life: Own Room Refresh
I have had a few moments of feeling clamped in my own space a few time. I know this is likely to happen to anyone, so here’s what I’d recommend.
- Repaint one wall using leftover paint
- Shift your bed to open a new corner
- Created a tea + journal corner using a chair and side table
- Replace your light fixture
- Replace your flooring with affordable vynil
These few touch ups will leave you feeling light again and your space refreshed. Thank me later 😊.
